THE EXTRA POINT – WESTERN KENTUCKY’S PREMIER STUDENT MEDIA OUTLET

The Extra Point is a storied, national program producing consistent, award-winning content. This past awards season the team earned four regional “College Emmys” from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, earning the most in the region. Additionally, with their colleagues at News Channel 12, WKU swept the Kentucky Broadcasters Association “College Television” category, winning four awards. It’s simple to say, but STORYTELLERS climb to greater heights here at The Extra Point.

How do I get involved?

At WKU, you can be part of The Extra Point team, no matter what major you’re in! Imagine this: in your very first semester, you’ll be on-air—whether you’re anchoring the show or out in the field reporting. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it’s a reality here. While other programs may make you wait, we throw you into the action right away. Plus, you’ll get your hands on the gear that pros use—cameras, microphones, lighting, and editing software—all from day one. And if you’re more into behind-the-scenes action, no worries! You’ll also have the chance to learn every role in the production process—camera operator, floor director, audio, graphics, and more. The best part? You’ll be gaining real-world experience, not just watching it happen from the sidelines. Ready to make your mark? Join The Extra Point and start building your media career today!

What opportunities will I receive at The Extra Point?

The Extra Point gives you the chance to develop a wide range of skills that will set you up for success in the media world—think video shooting, editing, reporting, directing, lighting, interviewing, storytelling, and so much more. You won’t just watch others do it—you’ll pitch and produce your own stories about WKU athletes, coaches, and local sports figures. As a beat reporter, you’ll get real experience covering WKU Athletics with opportunities like weekly press conferences, post-game interviews, and exclusive one-on-ones. And that’s just the start! Outside of the studio and classroom, you’ll have access to exclusive training and internships. Just ask Sports Directors Cole McIntire and Ryan Murphy, who were part of the National Press Photographer’s Association Y62 program. This past summer students held internships at WBKO and WNKY in Bowling Green, BBN Tonight (WLEX-18) in Lexington, WDRB in Louisville, WLKY in Louisville, and FOX19 NOW in Cincinnati. Whether you’re in the field, behind the camera, or in the newsroom, The Extra Point gives you a real-world experience that other programs just can’t match.
