(Bowling Green, KY) — Hilltopper fans have seen this film before.

An FCS Quarterback, Maverick McIvor from Abilene Christian is transferring to WKU, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.

At Abilene Christian, McIvor threw for 30 TDs (6th most in FCS) and 3,828 yards (4th most in FCS) while leading the Wildcats to a 9-5 record and a United Athletic Conference Championship this season.

Who is Maverick McIvor?

He committed to Texas Tech in 2019 as a 3-star QB, with offers from Iowa, Ole Miss, and North Carolina. In his best season as a junior, he recorded 3,415 yards while rushing for 870 yards and accounted for 52 total touchdowns en route to being named District 2-6A Offensive MVP. After three seasons at Texas Tech, with no snaps recorded, McIvor transferred to Abilene Christian.

As a Wildcat, McIvor torched defenses. With 9 starts in 2022, he notched 2,212 yards with 16 touchdowns, with a completion percentage over 60%. In 2023, McIvor threw 17 touchdowns and posted 5 interceptions.

This past season, the Western Kentucky transfer tallied 30 passing touchdowns and 7 interceptions. His total passing yards soared to 3,828 passing yards.

In a matchup against his former team, Texas Tech, McIvor threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns. The field general posted a completion percentage of 70.6% in the loss 52-51 in OT against the Red Raiders.

His career as a Wildcat ended in the second round of the FCS playoffs, losing to North Dakota State 51-31.

This isn’t the first time Head Coach Tyson Helton has found his presumed starter in the FCS ranks. Bailey Zappe, the current NCAA record holder for most passing yards and passing touchdowns, transferred from Houston Christian (then Houston Baptist) for the 2021 season. Austin Reed from West Florida played under Helton in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Reed threw for 4,744 yards in 2022, leading the nation.

Will Helton complete the trilogy?
