(LEXINGTON, Ky.) — WKU men’s basketball fell to No. 8 Kentucky, 87-68, on Tuesday night in Rupp Arena, dropping its record to 3-3. Freshman Julius Thedford led the Hilltoppers with a season-high 18 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in 24 minutes.

The Hilltoppers jumped to an early 3-2 lead on a three-pointer by Don McHenry, but Kentucky quickly took control. WKU stayed within striking distance, with Thedford hitting a triple and Kalambay’s free throws cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 22-18. However, Kentucky extended its advantage to 41-25 late in the first half.

WKU responded with McHenry’s driving layup and Thedford’s jumper and free throws, narrowing the deficit to 41-33 at halftime.

Out of the break, Kentucky extended its lead to 16 points. WKU fought back, with Thedford driving to the basket and drawing fouls, while Kalambay and Babacar Faye added key baskets. The Hilltoppers got within seven points with under 12 minutes remaining, but Kentucky pulled away in the final minutes for an 87-68 win.

“I’m pleased with our fight and resilience, and pleased with our effort, approach, and attitude,” head coach Hank Plona said. “Obviously Kentucky shoots the ball really well, so they had a lot to do with that. But all in all, I’m pleased with our performance tonight and feel it’s something we can use to improve and get us back to the tournament, which is our ultimate goal.”

The Hilltoppers held Kentucky to a season-low 27.6% from three-point range but struggled to keep pace offensively. Thedford led the team with 18 points, and Faye added 16 points before fouling out.

WKU will return home to face Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. CT in E.A. Diddle Arena.
