(BOWLING GREEN, Ky.) – WKU Men’s Basketball secured a 66-61 win over Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon in Diddle Arena to improve to 2-2 on the season. Don McHenry led the Hilltoppers’ efforts, posting a game-high 21 points with two steals, a pair of blocks, and a rebound. Enoch Kalambay added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, along with three assists and a steal. Babacar Faye rounded out the Hilltoppers in double figures, scoring 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting, plus nine rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
The game started with WKU taking an early lead thanks to Faye’s basket in the first 20 seconds. After a steal by Faye, McHenry made a quick layup to make it 6-2, but Lipscomb answered with a three-pointer to close within two points. The Bisons went on a 12-0 run to take a 16-9 lead, prompting WKU to call a timeout with 12:02 remaining. However, the Hilltoppers responded with a 12-0 run of their own, reclaiming the lead at 26-25. The first half ended with Lipscomb leading narrowly, 31-30.
In the second half, McHenry hit a three-pointer to give WKU a 33-31 advantage, and Jackson’s steal and assist to Marshall for a dunk pushed the lead to five, 40-35. Lipscomb briefly regained the lead with a 7-0 run, but McHenry hit another three to put WKU back on top. Kalambay’s and-one basket helped WKU maintain a slight lead, and Faye’s post score extended the Hilltoppers’ advantage to 57-51 with under four minutes left.
With 2:27 remaining, Lipscomb cut the lead to five with a fastbreak layup and later made a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game. However, Kalambay answered with a floater to make it 62-58, and Faye hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to secure the win. The Hilltoppers made key plays down the stretch, with McHenry’s coast-to-coast layup following a missed free throw sealing the victory.
“Good to get a win,” head coach Hank Plona said. “Not sure last Monday night we played well enough to beat a Wichita State team that’s very good. It was good to get back on the floor a couple days later and, certainly on the offensive side, to play pretty well, build some confidence, get a win and start building some momentum.”
The win marked WKU’s first over Lipscomb since 1936, and the Hilltoppers are now 2-1 all-time against the Bisons.
