The Kentucky State Police are conducting a shooting investigation after a Barren County Sheriff’s Department deputy was shot following a police pursuit.
The police chase landed Barren County Deputy Joseph Ford in the hospital with a gunshot wound.
An arrest citation indicates that during the altercation, the suspect, Jonathan Shelton, tried to reach for the gun of another law enforcement officer, causing the gun to go off and a bullet to hit Deputy Ford.
Ford was taken to TJ Sampson hospital before being transferred to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police charged Shelton with wanton endangerment, resisting arrest, DUI, and reckless driving, along with other related charges.
Police say Shelton was also driving on a suspended or revoked license.
After Deputy Ford’s release from the hospital, law enforcement blocked off roads in Glasgow as they escorted Ford back home.
In his first court appearance Shelton pleaded not guilty and was appointed a public defender.
A judge set his bond at $150,000 cash, as the court deemed him an extreme danger to the public.
